1. General description of Intern’s role:

 

The Business Intern will assist in the administrative operations, box office, concessions sales, fundraising and be a source of information about the company’s productions.

 

2.  Specific duties Intern will perform:*

 

The Business Intern will have the following duties:

 

• Take telephone reservations and credit card payments and entering them into the computer.
• Run a daily reservation report and deliver it to the Garden performance area.
• Prepare box office and concessions reports weekly.
• Special project assistant to such as fundraising event or marketing.
• Prepare merchandise reports daily and fill in inventory at the Garden.
• Keep track of tickets and supplies at the Garden.
• Assist in preparing mailings with the Business Manager.
• Call radio stations, newspapers and other media for publicity and reviews.
• Organize and deliver meals for the company on matinee days.
• Make arrangements for special performances.
• Update mailing and donor lists and keep computer records accurate.
• Keep a supply list.
• Relay telephone messages from office to production team.
• Keep office organized and in good working order.
• Assist the Producers and Business Manager in office and publicity work.
• Assist in optimizing current processes where appropriate.

 

We try to be mindful of an intern’s interest and abilities, and try to design tasks to best challenge and utilize their skills and interests.  Because our cast is approximately 12 people, individual attention and interaction is easily obtained and the participation and inclusion of the interns is an important part of the company.  Interns will also be asked to identify any gaps in the current processes and provide suggestions as to how to improve their positions.

3.  Professions to which Intern will be exposed

 

Directors, Producers, Professional Actors, Costume Designer, Set & Prop Designer, Company & Sales Manager, House Managers, Stage Manager, Board Members, Accountants and Volunteers (whose professions vary and though most are not in theater in a professional capacity, often have wonderful insights not to be overlooked.)

 

4.  Contract dates and hours required per week, Summer 2010

 

The Business Interns will begin approximately June 10^th and will assist with the management of Door Shakespeare approximately 40 hours a week.  Once the shows goes into performance it may be best to alter hours in order to allow the Intern to participate in office duties during the afternoon and box office (or other) duties in the evening. The Business Intern may be asked to stay one or more days past the close of the production to assist with strike. The final day of the Intern's contract would be approximately August 24th

6.  Necessary skills of Intern:

 

Experience with computer databases, word-processing and good math and organizational skills. Enjoys contact with the public, have the ability to be a self starter while working closely in collaboration with the Management Team. Love of theater and outdoors a plus.

 

7. Compensation:  $125/week + housing

 

8. Description and Purpose of Employer:

 

Door Shakespeare is a professional, not-for-profit, summer theater company. We perform outdoors, in a garden on the grounds of Lawrence University’s Björklunden in beautiful Door County, Wisconsin. We also have special indoor performances at other venues in Door County during the summer.  Our aim is to enliven the stories of Shakespeare’s plays by giving the characters heart and by telling a tale that is inviting and immediate and true to the audiences.  Giving and sharing universal experiences are what we believe makes Shakespeare’s plays “classic.”  Shakespeare’s use of language is also what sets the plays apart from other classics.  They illuminate the human condition and express it in poetry.
