Doorways Students on Stages Across the Peninsula!
DOORWAYS is a week-long workshop dedicated to nurturing a young person’s ability to voice opinions, communicate thoughts, and foster creativity through theater games, ensemble work, and Shakespeare’s text. Now in its 18th season, this program will be offered for three sessions, allowing more students to work with our professional company of actors and educators. This program has fostered many youth that are now appearing on professional stages across the peninsula. Doorways alumni including Wiley Scott Fortune and Zoe Armbruster are now appearing in Door Shakespeare’s production of THE HEART OF ROBIN HOOD by David Farr. John Brotherhood, a former Doorways student and Door Shakespeare company member, is now appearing in OKLAHOMA IN WISCONSIN at Northern Sky Theater. This is a wonderful testament to the work and dedication Door Shakespeare puts into cultivating the voices and talent of our youth. Door Shakespeare is proud to consistently provide this unique week-long training and experience for students residing in or visiting the Door County peninsula.
A typical day at DOORWAYS consists of games and warm ups in the morning, followed by masterclasses with professional teaching artists in the afternoon, and rehearsal at the end of the day. Examples of masterclasses from years past include workshops in stage combat, clowning, hip hop Shakespeare, viewpoints, improv, and more! The camp will culminate in a Greenshow Performance at 7:15 pm preceding Door Shakespeare’s Friday night main stage performance of Wm. Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT directed by Joseph Hanreddy. The Greenshow is a compilation of scenes, monologues, and songs from Shakespeare’s canon featuring all Doorways participants. Professional actors from the casts of TWELFTH NIGHT and THE HEART OF ROBIN HOOD by David Farr direct the Greenshow, which proves a meaningful and gratifying experience for both students and directors.
The first Doorways camp was a wonderful success with over 30 students attending the camp and the third camp in August is already full. Spaces are still available for students in camp #2, which runs runs July 24th – 28th. Each day begins at 10:00am and ends at 12:30pm. Door Shakespeare company members Jennefer Folsom and Elyse Edelman will co-headmaster the camps.
